The Origin of Noel


　Ｎｏｅｌはもともと「誕生日」を意味する言葉でしたが、
その後キリストの誕生日、すなわち「クリスマス」を
意味する言葉になりました。
　私は１２月２１日（冬至）生まれなので、
「Ｎｏｅｌ」を名乗るのはちょっとフライング気味
だと思われるかもしれませんが、
冬至の日は西洋では古くから太陽の誕生日として
盛大に祝われていたそうです。
　冬至は１年でいちばん夜の長い日。
これが過ぎると次第に日が長くなっていくわけですから、
太陽が生まれ変わる日だと考えられていたのでしょう。
　私の名前は太陽の誕生日、冬至を意味しているんです。
